This is an Inro from the end of the 17th century, when Japan was at a new dawn. Its patterns show 69 states of Japan, from Ezo (Hokkaido) in the north to Oosumi (Kagoshima) in the south, using Kinpun Makie of different colors. Then the old name of each state is engraved in Hira Makie. One of the interesting features is Nyogashima, painted at the bottom of the lower part. There always existed a legend of an island where only women live, and the story can be found in different parts of Japan. In this Inro, however, the island is imposingly placed in the middle of the bottom as if it were Australia. The Netsuke carved with great details signifies the Seven Gods of Good Fortune on a treasure ship going around Japan; the Gods must be freely flying around time and space, and enjoying the happenings on the Earth. Fine brush works express waves crushing to a coast, while delicate gold pigments recreate boundless deep sea. Did its commissioner ever conquer Japan?
