The Tokugawa Shogunate, that was established in 1603, in Edo (now Tokyo), fortified its authority and power by issuing several laws on its way. While the Samurai were using swords with a variety of shapes in a still lingering atmosphere of the Warring States period, the Shogunate eventually compiled the rules regarding swords after issuing the “Daisho Katana no Sei” in 1645. The law regulated in detail from the size of swords to the shape of koshirae and the colors of tsukaito, as well as the form of swords itself came to represent the status of the Samurai.
The koshirae of this sword is called [kuro roironuri sanbukizami saya daisho koshirae]. Both of the daisho blades are mumei, but considered to be the make in the late-Edo period. They have fine itamehada with angular niegachi gunome, which makes it appear suekoto. The koshirae for both swords are matching, whose fuchigashira has the engrave of Shakudoji chikurin shichikenjin-zu by Tomonaga Kimura, and tsuba uses Tetsuji baika sukashi. The saya of sanbu kizami has a couple of minor damage in lacquer, but the wooden base is still intact. Formal daisho koshirae defines a saya to be kuroronuri, thus the sanbu kizami saya can be considered semiformal.
Though mumei, this sword are a set of daisho koshirae with both the sword and wakizashi that represent the significance of daisho blades.
