In the first year of Onin (1467), the dispute over the succession of Shogun Ashikaga brought about the Onin War between Katsumoto Hosokawa and Sozen Yamana. The turmoil quickly spread over the entire Japan, leading to the Gekokujo era (junior dominating senior) and battles for approximately 150 years. During this period, the production of swords significantly increased, and the Sue-Bizen flourished with sword craftsmen such as SUKESADA, KATSUMITSU, MUNEMITSU, TADAMITSU, and KIYOMITSU in Bizen, one of the largest areas of production.

This sword is a piece crafted by KIYOMITSU of Sue-Bizen. Since its blade is broad with Saki-zori, there is no difference in the width of its base and the tip, and its Chu-kissaki (medium-sized tip) is slender. This piece is thought to have been made during Eiroku, Genki, and Tensho years. This exactly overlaps the era when powerful figures such as Nobunaga, Shingen, and Kenshin made their names. The Hamon of the sword, which is the best feature of this piece, shows KIYOMITSU’s favorite Suguha; it has Ko-choji / Ko-gunome that are straightly lined with Ko-ashi. The Kitae is relatively clear, and has fine Itamehada; and faint Midare-utsuri appears in the light. Its Yo, warping toward the tip is another of its features, which is unique to KIYOMITSU. The Boshi with significant Yaki is also characteristic to Sue-koto, and the Yaki of this piece almost appears to be Ichimai-boshi. The Bobi is deeply curved into the blade, which stops as Kakudome in Nakago. The Nakago underwent Suriage, and was cut to the engraving “Bizen-no-kuni-ju-osa” with a Futotagane.

There is a black line, 3cm long in its Mune, slightly below the Kissaki, due to Mune-ware; however, the crack is tight and not apparent. The condition of its Togi is perfect, and its Shirasaya / Habaki needs no repair.

Sword craftsman KIYOMITSU represents Sue-Bizen. This is an excellent piece that survived numerous battles to show us its glorious image of the past.
