This Sukashi-Tsuba was made by MASATOMO of the Goami Group, who resided in Onomichi and Mihara of Bingo. The pattern elegantly shows a fan and irises, thus could be described as “Hi-Ougi-Ayame.” Also, it has waves and a fan, which means the target of a fan used in Genpei’s Battle of Yashima. Goami lived in Onomichi of Setouchi, where the town Yashima also belongs. He may have intended to express the rise and fall of Heike, and also pathos. The museum shop of Tokyo National Museum carries a bottle opener that mimics the Tsuba by Masatomo Goami.
