The widely opened eyes of a moth are the fear of approaching, unavoidable “death.” Flapping the wings and bending the body away from a spider, the moth is trying to escape with all its might. Such tense fear is vividly, almost painfully, expressed in this Tsuba. The spider, on the other hand, holds all its emotions, cornering the game slowly but accurately. What a cold-hearted creature! In addition to the pattern and inlay, thick ferrites specific to the Higo-tsuba communicate this intense “heat,” which catches and never lets go our eyes.
