This Warabite-Tosu was made by sword craftsman AKIMITSU YOKOI, who has his own forging studio in Okayama Prefecture. It is called Warabite since the Nakago is shaped like a fern. This shape is found in the treasure of Nara Shoso-in and also in swords unearthed from ancient burial mounds. Warabite is thought to be the origin of Wanto. Also, a set of Tosu, which is considered to be made between the Nara Period and the Heian Period, has been designated as one of the important cultural properties. This piece is designed based on this set.
In addition to its unique form, the beauty of this Tosu lies in the Jigane made of steel washed in the craftsman’s studio. The steel is strong, finely patterned, and has Jinie. The skills of AKIMITSU are fully expressed, and their lure is ingrained in this blade of just about 12cm (4-sun). To-maki is added to its Tsuka, and a Shirasaya is attached to the blade, which makes the handling easier and the storing safer.
As the production of Tosu and Kogatana is difficult due to their small sizes, the ability of AKIMITSU significantly shows in this piece. The Warabite Tosu is the result of his untiring study of swords and superb workmanship.
